Abstract
This review highlights the importance of surface analytical methods in the elucidation of liquid crystal alignment mechanism with the focus on two aspects. In the first part, this review examines current literature related to studies of surface modification of substrates with the goal of creating beneficial interactions with liquid crystals resulting in their alignment. The second part of the paper highlights surface studies of various aspects of surface orientation and properties of aligned liquid crystal layers on various substrates.
