Abstract
A chain of Cosserat Point Elements (CPEs) is used to model whirling of an extensible string. The discrete equations of motion are studied analytically and numerical results are presented. Particular emphasis is focused on steady-state solutions for which it is proved that the string must remain in a rotating plane. Free and forced non-steady solutions, together with their stability properties, are studied numerically.
