► Sumu-Mayangna speakers display access to multiple spatial FoR strategies. ► The direct FoR is most preferred. ► Absolute FoR usage is restricted to older generations, and for east/west contexts. ► Nonlinguistic task performance indicates a bias toward the absolute solution type. ► Some evidence for linguistic and cognitive performance alignment is indicated.
