Abstract
Via ten thematic headings (The Central European novel assumes the existence of Central Europe, From when until when?, Borders and expansion, Why does Central Europe primarily exist in novels?, Mélange, The individual and history, The experience of exile, Extinction – nostalgia for the end, Small towns, “They”), this study addresses the novel from geographical, political, historical, situational, demographical and humorous aspects. Special focus is paid to Central Europe's relation to the novel as a specific genre, given that it represents the most natural and moldable medium for a region in a state of flux, i.e. a means which keeps pace with the very content it comprises.
