Abstract

This article examines the relationship between two remarkable inhabitants of Nizhnii Novgorod: E.K. Medtner, who was an official censor, and Anna Nikolaevna Schmidt, a reporter for the newspaper Nizhegorodskii Listok. The latter was known as the creator of a mystical conception of the entire world and its history. Although Medtner shared an interest in mysticism, he was not especially close with Schmidt. But his archive contains some important documents about Schmidt that add to our knowledge of her. This article includes an unpublished text by S.D. Protopopov, who was on familiar terms with Schmidt, as well as two appendices with letters from Schmidt to Aleksandr Blok and Andrei Belyi.
