Abstract
The article discusses the “shimmering” mythological model of the world of the fishermen-hunters of Chukotka. Their lives and culture are determined by tradition. However, when culture changes, some of its features may be forgotten or not remembered well. In that case meaning-carrying objects of the “old” culture become neutral ones in the “new” culture. In this new culture, may, for instance, “disappear” medicinal herbs, because knowledge about them is lost. In this way, quick changes in culture may lead to changes in the surrounding world.
