Abstract

The theme of this article is one to which Platonov scholars have already devoted much attention, but the study of the real-life context of Platonovʼs work reveals new aspects of this theme. The article begins with a survey of the various existing studies of the ways in which Fedorovʼs ideas are reflected in the ‘The Foundation Pit’. The aim of this survey is to show both what the views of other scholars have in common and how they differ. One of the most important manifestations, in ‘The Foundation Pit’, of the influence of Fedorovʼs ideas is the account of Voshchev collecting in his bag examples “of worn-out enduring frailty”. The kolkhozniks themselves end up – unexpectedly – being included in this capacity, as yet more examples of such “frailty”. Reference to contemporary documents suggests that Platonov may, in this connection, have been reinterpreting Fedorovʼs most fundamental idea – that of “the resurrection of the dead” – in metaphorical terms.
