Abstract

The article proposes an analysis of the reception of Andrei Platonovʼs war stories. I will demonstrate the exclusion of these stories from the literary history of The Great Patriotic War (in the 1950s), make a detailed account of the program and history of adapting Platonovʼs wartime fiction to the Soviet literary ideology (The Khrushchev Thaw era; 1970–1980s): severe editing of all of the stories published at the time; total absence of any information on Platonovʼs lifetime criticism from academic works on the war stories; complete ignoring of the wartime literatureʼs chronology. The lifetime criticism of the war stories (1942–1946/7) is argued to provide the most interesting and promising data for contemporary Platonov studies. The article draws on rich material from archival sources and Soviet periodicals.
