Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of portraits in A. Platonovʼs prose. It uncovers the reasons why the study of Platonovʼs portraits is rather problematic, discusses the most important characteristics of Platonovʼs literary portrait and illustrates these with fragments from Chevengur and ‘Kotlovan’. Special attention is paid to theoretical and methodological conceptions of portraits in literature and to the shortcomings of these conceptions for a nonconventional writer like Platonov.
