Abstract
This study explores stylistic devices in Leonid Andreev's novella ‘T'ma’ (‘Darkness’). Examination of 45 pages of text (14,788 words) shows that the novella is based on a complex hierarchy of multiple symbolic contrasts, emphasized by a range of literary devices, such as repetition of theme words, metaphors, antonyms, similes, and oxymorons. The changes in the characters' perceptions and the twists of the plot are indicated by stylistic code-switching.
