Abstract
This article uncovers the literary clue to Kruchenykh's programmatic trans-rational poem ‘The Military Challenge of Zau’ (1919) – Aleksandr Pushkin's essay about American Indians ‘John Tanner’ (1836). In his sly literary joke, Kruchenykh acts as both savage and refined expert on Pushkin, theorist of poetry and lyrical poet, professional provocateur and avant-garde mythmaker.
