In this article the author focuses on the construction of authority in modern society by the media of radio, telegraph and telephone, observing how they have been reflected in belles-lettres. He argues that authority is formed through a “pervasive effect”: people use these media in ways that are marginal to their original function, but which reinforce the authority of the state. This occurred especially in the practice of totalitarian regimes, where tele-radio-communication perverted the authority discourse. The author tries to show that this perverse authority establishes a mystic and mythical semantics which is reflected in the literature of the totalitarian state.
