Abstract

Throughout the time a special attention was given to children, especially to the children in need. In Romania during the transition from the comunist period, a lot of changes occured in the social system and even more were made during the process of adherence to European Union. The changes in the social system involved changes in the architectural programs and in the educational system. Romania had a real problem with the children in need and even if important changes were made, the street children and children from poor families are still an important issue in nowadays. More than 25,5% of Romanian children are living in poverty, the percentage is the highest of all 35 countries member of European Union, and in 2011 in Romania there were 400 172 children aged between 3 to 17 not attending any form of education. Because of the economical world crises and poverty, in Romania there are lots of poor families and a new category of children in need appeared- the situation of children remaining at home deprived of parental affection because the situation of families migration to work abroad. As a result of the changes made in the social system and the appearance of new categories of problems and children in need, new educational programs were created in order to fulfill the child's needs. This change requires new principles in the process of designing for this category of children. The aim of this article is to analyze the evolution of children in need, from Romania, and the development, the results, and the issues of the educational and architectural programs dedicated to them, in the last 50 years, enunciating new directions specific to the current situation.
