Contemporary lifestyle conditions rapid evolution and regeneration of knowledge thus making adequate development of research skills an integral part of professional music education. The research objective is to identify effective educational forms which reveal research potential of prospective music educators. The article reviews major approaches to engaging students in research activities during their education in higher educational institutions. The article elaborates on the specific mode of training – staging folklore rituals – using the example of disciplines related to music folklore. The author analyses the goals, targets and content of ritual staging, describes the specifics of all preparation stages and, above all, identifies the potential for promoting research activity among students.
