Abstract
Teaching methods made a long historical development, to the oldest methods belong lexical methods, especially the method of a lecture and an interview. Some of the modern methods are not applied in traditional education, although their positive effect on students was proved. Many of these methods are used in specialised schools. Some of the new methods became part of the alternative education, others are less used even in classic education. Teaching methods are classified from various points of view. Alternative teaching methods find themselves outside the main streams of foreign language teaching and they occur as a reaction to traditional methods.
