Entrepreneurship as a Euphemism for Self-employment

The present article argues that the terms “self-employment” and “entrepreneurship” are used indistinctly, and although similarities do exist, the purpose, approaches and consequences of the two terms are very different.Firstly, an analysis of some of the characteristics of self-employment compared to entrepreneurship shows that there are obvious differences regarding their aim, strategies and financing among others. We thus propose a definition to distinguish both terms arguing that the strategic purpose of self-employment is the creation and maintenance of employment while the strategic purpose of entrepreneurship is the creation of added value to society and a clear vocation for activity growth.After considering possible causes of the terminological confusion, some criteria were established in order to distinguish both terms. From the educational point of view and that of institutional support, the repercussions of the lack of differentiation are obvious, since two activities with different needs could be being treated in the same way.

ResumenEl presente trabajo plantea que se utilizan indistintamente los términos “auto-empleo” y “emprendimiento”. Sin embargo, aunque puedan existir similitudes, son diferentes en cuanto a propósitos, enfoques y consecuencias.En primer lugar al analizar algunas de las características del autoempleo comparado con el emprendimiento vemos que existen diferencias claras en cuanto a objetivos, estrategias y financiación entre otras. A partir de ahí proponemos una definición que distinga ambos términos y se plantea la tesis de que las actividades de autoempleo tienen como finalidad estratégica la creación y mantenimiento de puestos de trabajo mientras que las actividades de emprendimiento tienen como finalidades estratégicas la creación de valor añadido a la sociedad y una clara vocación de crecimiento de dicha actividad.Por último, se hacen algunas consideraciones acerca de los motivos de la confusión terminológica y se establecen unos criterios para poder distinguir ambos términos. Las repercusiones de la confusión son obvias tanto desde un punto de vista educativo como de soporte institucional ya que se podría estar tratando de la misma manera dos actividades con diferentes necesidades.
