Abstract

The common belief is that the students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences are lagging far behind in the achievement of the required competency levels in English. This study investigates the impediments to the use of English by the undergraduates taking the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Ruhuna as the research field. It talks about the social, cultural, political, regional, attitudinal and many more differences of the undergraduates and evaluates the new proposal presented by the English Language Teaching Unit.
