Abstract

The importance role of a leader to the success of organization is unquestionable. Researchs in leadership have successfully provided many theories about the leaders and the organizations they lead. Triple Helix concept of academia/business/government interconnection can spur the innovative capacities and capabilities of developing countries. Indonesia as one of developing countries is calling for leaders with sets of characters, believed as enablers to boost economic development. Based on Triple Helix concept there are two questions should be addressed for the answers. First is “How each sector perceived successful leaders in academia – business – government sector?” (value side), and what make those leaders succeed (key success factors side). Second questions is “Is there any sets of common characteristics or interconnection characters among those sectors?”.Academic, business and government sectors are the sources of leaders providers to the nation. It is recognized that the growth of a country affected by a policy covering three inter-related sectors of academic, business and government. It was also very clear that there has been intensive leaders movement among those sectors. There was a phenomena that each sector may provide different leadership characters and behavior. This research was conducted as an early identification of characteristic of people that are considered being successful leaders by their constituents (members) and as an effort to discover the common factors and distinguishing factors the three sectors.amongResearch was carried out by conducting exclusive interviews by more undergraduate students in School of Business and Management class from year 2005 to 2011 with more than 400 leaders who were perceived as“role models” by interviewers. Interviewers as a field researcher attempted to learn success stories from their role models, and identified “individual character” which were believed to be the key to successful leader in those three sector. Further research was done using the 400 role models success stories to identify sets of characters and sets of skills and knowledge that are considered important to become effective leaders in all three sectors. The research identified the sets of the perceived reason to be role model, the identification of effective leadership characteristics in three sectors, the common characteristics and skills and knowledge.
