Abstract

Work-zone management is a major safety concern in road construction projects and while established guidelines exist for other countries (e.g. the US and Germany), there is a lack of practical experience in Greece. At the same time, the large number of new major road infrastructure projects require that motorway enhancement takes place while the safe operation of traffic is maintained. Constructability is an important aspect, which becomes more pressing in light of the public-private partnership (PPP) nature of these projects. In this paper, a simulation-based approach for the management of workzone construction scheduling for the Korinth-Patras motorway is presented. The simulation results are used to develop a number of guidelines that are tailored to Greek motorways and can be used for time-space scheduling of work-zones. © 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
