Abstract
► We argue that any given type of tie in a network may have multiple meanings. ► Variation in tie-meaning leaves traces in the network's micro- and macrostructure. ► Meaning diversity arises from actors' differential exposure to distinctive netdoms. ► And from differentiated meanings of previous ties upon which new ones are laminated. ► Using Florentine loans, we show tie-meaning and network structure to be coextensive.
