La reforma de las cofradías en el siglo xviii: Nueva España y Sevilla en comparación

ResumenLa reforma de las cofradías del siglo xviii ofrece importantes elementos de comparación sobre los objetivos, instrumentos, alcances y consecuencias de las reformas borbónicas en España y México. Las cofradías fueron redefinidas como corporaciones seglares bajo la autoridad del rey y no del clero, sin embargo, se advierte bien que el proceso fue mucho más importante en la Península que en la Nueva España. La reforma, además, pretendió uniformar a las cofradías siguiendo unas reglas fijas en su organización, actos de culto y demás prácticas religiosas, reforzando en ellas la caridad y la utilidad pública.

The reform of brotherhoods in the 18th century offers important points of comparison between the objectives, instruments, scope and consequences of the Bourbon reforms in Spain and in Mexico. Brotherhoods were redefined as corporations lay under the authority of the king and not the clergy, however, we see that the process was much more important in the Peninsula than in New Spain. The reform also sought to standardize the brotherhoods fixed rules in their organization, acts of worship and other religious practices, reinforcing in them charity and public utility.
