Abstract
⺠Reassesses evidence for Edward I's armies. ⺠Historians may have underestimated quantities of staff supporting cavalry. ⺠Infantry forces were large and well organised, but desertion was a major problem. ⺠Battles were few, and evidence for innovative tactics is thin. ⺠After 1314 new solutions were needed.
