Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a novel device with the function to produce energy and degrade organic materials. The characteristics and the catalytic activity of anodic electrochemically active bacteria are one of the key factors to affect MFC performance. This review summarized the enrichment, source, taxonomy, physiological and biochemical characteristics, and electricity production ability of electrochemically active bacteria.
Three main kinds of electron transfer mechanisms between micro-organism and electrode surface, including nanowires, redox proteins on outer membrane, and self-secreted mediators of micro-organisms or added mediators to complete the electron transfer process between micro-organisms and electrodes.Figure optionsDownload full-size imageDownload as PowerPoint slide
