Abstract

•Thermodynamic study for four ternary oxides PbMoO4, PbMo2O7, Pb2MoO5 and PbMo3O10 was reported for the first time.•Mass spectrometric Knudsen-cell method and quantum chemical calculations were combined for the thermodynamic study of the oxides.•Formation enthalpies, molecular structures and ionisation energies for the ternary oxides are reported for the first time.

The formation and stability of the ternary lead-molybdenum oxides PbMoO4, PbMo2O7, PbMo3O10 and Pb2MoO5 in the gas phase were studied. The PbMoO4 and PbMo2O7 species were unequivocally identified in mass spectrometric experiments by the determination of m/z-values, isotopic patterns and appearance energies. Presumably, the PbMo3O10 and Pb2MoO5 species were also present in the gas phase. Thermodynamic data for the ternary oxides were obtained experimentally by means of a mass spectrometric Knudsen-cell method and were confirmed by quantum chemical calculations.
