Abstract

•IR and Raman spectra of SrC2O4⋅H2O and SrC2O4⋅2H2O were recorded and assigned.•Assignments are discussed in comparison with the related calcium oxalates.•SrC2O4⋅2H2O is isomorphous with CaC2O4⋅2H2O (weddellite).•SrC2O4⋅H2O and CaC2O4⋅H2O (whewellite) are not isostructural but are strongly related.•Structural peculiarities of these oxalates are considered in the discussion.

The infrared and Raman spectra of the two hydrates of strontium oxalate, SrC2O4⋅H2O and SrC2O4⋅2H2O, were recorded and discussed on the basis of their structural peculiarities and in comparison with the spectra of the related calcium oxalates and other previously investigated metallic oxalates.
