Abstract
The cross-sections for collisional excitation transfer Csâ¡(6â¢D)âQDâ¢3Cs(7P1/2) and Csâ¡(6â¢D)âQDâ¢4Cs(7P3/2), and fine structure mixing Cs(6D5/2)âQ65Cs(6D3/2) due to collisions with helium and argon atoms at temperatures in the range between 333 and 367 K were determined using atomic fluorescence. The cross-sections for the processes Cs(6D) + He, Ar â Cs(7PJ) + He, Ar were found to be QD3He = (0.9 ± 0.4) Ã 10â 16 cm2, QD4He = (2.6 ± 1.2) Ã 10â 16 cm2, QD3Ar = (1.2 ± 0.6) Ã 10â 18 cm2 and QD4Ar = (2.6 ± 1.3) Ã 10â 18 cm2. These values are consistent with the results obtained at higher temperatures and reported previously. The cross-sections for the He and Ar-induced 6DJ fine-structure mixing were determined to be Q65He = (54 ± 15) Ã 10â 16 cm2 and Q65Ar = (17 ± 5) Ã 10â 16 cm2 and were found to fit very well into the existing body of cross-section data for intra-multiplet (nP1 / 2 â nP3 / 2; nD5 / 2 â nD3 / 2) mixing in cesium induced by collisions with helium and argon.
