Abstract

The development and performance of traditional and advanced composite materials for ceramic cutting tools were described. The improvement in performance, additives and their mechanisms on ceramic cutting tools, such as Si3N4 matrix, Si3N4-TiC composite, Si3N4-TiC-Co composite, Si3N4-WC-ZrO2 composite, Sialon, fiber toughening of Si3N4, Si3N4 composite, TiCN composite, TiB2 composite, PCBN, CBN-iN composite, improvement in performance with organic compounds, gradient complex phase coating ceramics, were discussed. New applications were developed. Ceramic cutting tools play important roles in the development of advanced manufacture technology, and the increased application of ceramic cutting tools in proportion is inevitable. Types and brands of commonly used ceramic tools were summarized.
