Abstract

•A facile and versatile N-sulfonylation of amines, imides, amides and anilides using p-TsCl under sonic condition is reported.•The reaction works well with catalytic amounts of atomized sodium in EtOH–THF.•The method is rapid, simple, convenient and is efficient.•Ultrasound enhances the rate of the reaction and gives products in very high yields.•The merits of the strategy are minimization of waste and ease of product isolation.

A simple, facile and an efficient procedure for the N-sulfonylation of amines, imides, amides and anilides using p-TsCl in the presence of atomized sodium in a mixture of EtOH–THF under sonic condition is developed. The method is rapid, mild and inexpensive; yields are high and the reactions go to completion within 2–8 min.
