Abstract
Recent developments in the synthesis and characterisation of transition metal coordination and organometallic compounds, incorporating either the noble gases or the noble gas fluorides as ligands, are reviewed together for the first time, and placed in an historical context.
► The first combined survey of metal-noble gas and metal-noble gas fluoride complexes. ► Recent developments in organometallic noble gas complexes in an historical context. ► Multiple noble gas metal interactions to matrix isolated Lewis acidic metal centres. ► Homoleptic gold and mercury xenon coordination compounds. ► Xenon difluoride and krypton difluoride as ligands in solution and the solid state.
