Boratabenzenes are heterocyclic 6π-electron aromatic anions that can serve as surrogates of cyclopentadienyl-type ligands in the rare-earth metal chemistry. The synthesis of mono-, bis- and tris(boratabenzene) rare-earth metal complexes, including the divalent and trivalent rare-earth metal derivatives, their halides, amides, and alkyls are summarized in this review. Their structural features, stoichiometric reactivity, and catalytic activity are also presented.
