Abstract

•Synthesis of two new Cu(II) MOFs with AA, PA and bpa.•Detailed study of X-ray crystal structures and their packing.•Sorption studies showed significant N2 and H2 uptake.•Magnetic studies showed antiferromagnetic coupling between Cu(II) metal centres.

Two new metal organic frameworks, namely {[Cu(AA)(bpa)0.5]·H2O}n (1) and {[Cu2(PA)2(bpa)]·2H2O}n (2) [AA = adipic acid; PA = pimelic acid; bpa = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane] have been prepared through the solvent diffusion technique, and structurally characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and thermogravimetric analyses. 1 displays a three-dimensional (3D) framework simplified by a (6)-connected uninodal net with rob topology, while 2 exhibits two-dimensional (2D) network with sql/Shubnikov tetragonal plane net topology, having (4)-connected uninodal net. The N2 and H2 adsorption isotherm of 1–2 indicates typical Type-I sorption behaviour at 77 K. The magnetic properties of 1–2 have also been determined, and showed the antiferromagnetic coupling between the Cu(II) metal centres.
