•Hydrothermal syntheses of bimetallic vanadium arsonate materials.•Structures of vanadium arsonate clusters.•Mixed dimensional vanadium arsonate material.
Hydrothermal reactions of sodium orthovanadate, copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate, phenylarsonic acid and an imine ligand yielded two compounds of the Cu(II)-imine/VxOy/RAsO3n− family. Under the conditions of this study the one-dimensional [Cu(phen)VO2(O3AsC6H5)(HO3AsC6H5)] (1) and the unique mixed-dimensionality structure of [Cu(bpy)VO2(O3AsC6H5)(HO3AsC6H5)][Cu(bpy)V2O4(O3AsC6H5)2] (2), which consists of a cluster and a one-dimensional chain, were produced. (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine)
