Four new divalent metal 5-sulfoisophthalate (sip) coordination polymers with ancillary isomeric pyridylnicotinamide ligands have been prepared by hydrothermal methods and structurally characterized. [Cu(H4-pna)(sip)(H2O)]n (1, 4-pna = 4-pyridylnicotinamide) has a simple 1D chain structure. In contrast its cadmium analog [Cd(H4-pna)(sip)]n (2) possesses a 3D sra 42638 topology, revealing a novel 5-connected 43668 self-penetrated network if hydrogen bonding mediated by the protonated H4-pna pyridyl rings is taken into account. {[Cd3(3-pna)2(sip)2(H2O)6]·2H2O}n (3, 3-pna = 3-pyridylnicotinamide) manifests a previously unreported binodal 3,4-connected (6284)(628)4 layer topology. Its zinc analog {[Zn(H3-pna)(sip)]·1.5H2O}n (4) exhibits a 3-connected 1D ladder structure. Luminescent and thermal degradation properties of these materials are also reported.
