A nonanuclear copper(II) cluster [Cu9(bshz)3(Py)10(C2H7N)(DMF)]·2DMF·2C2H7N (1) and a pentanuclear cobalt(III) cluster [Co5(bshz)2(Py)12](ClO4)3·10H2O (2) with N,N′-bis(salicyloyl)ethanedihydrazide (H6bshz) as ligand were synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The three bshz6− ligands in 1 consolidate nine Cu(II) ions in decadentate mode, while the two bshz6− ligands in 2 consolidate five Co(III) ions in nonadentate mode with one of their oxalyl O atoms free from coordination. Clusters 1 and 2 are the rare examples of polynuclear compounds constructed by dihydrazide ligands. The magnetic study of cluster 1 indicates an antiferromagnetic interaction between Cu(II) ions.
