Coordination and supramolecular assemblies of alkali and alkaline-earth metal ions to perhydroxycucurbit[5]uril {(HO)10Q[5]} in the presence of [SiW12O40]4− anions display markedly different conformations. Interaction of (HO)10Q[5] molecules with Rb+ or Ba2+ cations in the presence of [SiW12O40]4− anions results in two-dimensional networks in which (HO)10Q[5] complexes and [SiW12O40]4− anions link through Rb+ or Ba2+ cations via coordination bonds. Interaction of (HO)10Q[5] molecules with Ca2+ cations in the presence of [SiW12O40]4− anions forms a three-dimensional framework with seven different interaction conformations of the (HO)10Q[5]/Ca2+ coordination pair and [SiW12O40]4− anions through ion-dipole interaction and hydrogen bonding. In contrast, interaction of (HO)10Q[5] molecules with Ba2+ cations in the presence of [SiW12O40]4− anions forms six-membered “bracelets” via direct coordination of Ba2+ to (HO)10Q[5]. The (HO)10Q[5]/Ba2+ complexes show better selectively adsorption capacities for acetone.
