•A new bipyridine-dicarboxylate ligand is introduced.•A new polymeric manganese(II) complex was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions.•Atoms-in-Molecules analysis of the manganese(II) complex shows isolated paramagnetic centres.•Magnetic properties of the manganese(II) complex show weak antiferromagnetic interactions.
The new 2D coordination polymer with a new 3,3′-bipyridine-2,2′dicarboxylate monohydrate (3,3′-bpdc·H2O) ligand is described: [Mn(3,3′-bpdc)]n. In the distorted octahedral coordination environment of the Mn2+ cations the 3,3′-bptc ligand is bonded through nitrogen/carboxylate oxygen atoms. The [Mn(3,3′-bpdc)]n polymer is characterized by X-ray diffraction studies, IR spectra, elemental analysis, TGA, magnetic properties measurements and the Atoms-in-Molecules analysis of the electron density.
Graphical abstractSynthesis, crystal structure, the Atoms-in-Molecules analysis of the electron density, and magnetic properties of manganese(II) coordination polymer with 3,3′-bipyridine-2,2′-dicarboxylate as a ligand are described.Figure optionsDownload full-size imageDownload as PowerPoint slide
