•Ru complexes including benzimidazole and visible light.•Adamantane phosphine PTA Ru complex.•Water soluble complex.•Redox and UV–Vis properties of Ru complexes with benzimidazole.
Complexes [Ru(N,N,N-tris(benzimidazole-2-yl-methyl)amine-κN,N′,N‴)Cl(PPh3)]Cl (1), [Ru(N,N-bis(benzimidazole-2-yl-methyl)hydroxyethylamine-κN,N′,N‴)Cl(PPh3)]Cl (2) and [Ru(N,N,N-tris(2-aminoethyl)amine-κN,N′,N‴)Cl(PPh3)]Cl (3) were synthesized by reaction of [Ru(PPh3)3Cl2] with N,N,N-tris(benzimidazole-2-yl-methyl)amine (L1), N,N-bis(benzimidazole-2-yl-methyl)hydroxyethylamine (L2) and N,N,N-tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (L3), respectively. The water soluble complex [Ru(N,N,N-tris(benzimidazole-2-yl-methyl)amine-κN,N′,N‴)Cl(PTA)]Cl (4) was obtained by reaction of 1 with PTA (1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphinoadamantane). Complexes were characterized by IR, NMR and elemental analysis. The structure of 1 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Photo- and electro-chemical behaviours evolution of the complexes were also done. The structural and electronic properties of 1, 2 and 3 were studied by DFT and DFT-TDDFT.
Graphical abstractRuthenium benzimidazole complexes were synthesized and characterized, some of them being water soluble. The behaviour under visible light of the complexes was also studied together with their redox properties. Their structures were analysed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, DFT and DFT-TDDFT.Figure optionsDownload full-size imageDownload as PowerPoint slide
