Abstract

•Two new polymeric manganese(II)/copper(II) complexes were synthesized.•Thermogravimetric studies show stepwise decomposition patterns.•Magnetic properties studies show weak antiferromagnetic interactions in both compounds.•Magnetic interactions are transmitted in carboxylate-bridged chains.

Two new coordination polymers employing 2,2′-bipyridine-3,3′,6,6′-tetracarboxylate (bptc) as a ligand are presented: [Mn2(H2O)5(bptc)]n (1) and [Cu2(H2O)2(bptc)]n·2nH2O (2). 1 is a 2D coordination polymer stabilized by Mn–O coordination bonds, where magnetic interactions are transmitted within carboxylate-bridged chains. 2 forms polymeric double chains. 1 and 2 are characterized by X-ray diffraction studies, IR spectra, elemental analysis and TGA. Magnetic properties measurements show weak antiferromagnetic coupling of the metal ions in both compounds.
