Abstract

A mixture of copper(I) chloride with imidazolidine-2-thione (SC3H6N2) (M:L::1:1 ratio) in acetonitrile when left undisturbed at room temperature yielded the polymer, {Cu8(μ3-SN2C3H6)4(μ-SN2C3H6)4(η1-Cl)8}n1 (pale olive green). The same reaction in 1:2 molar ratio yielded polymer 1 along with a new polymer {Cu6(μ3-SC3H6N2)2(μ-SC3H6N2)4Cl2(μ-Cl)4}n2 (colorless). Polymers 1 and 2 have been characterized using elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The central core of polymer 1 forms staircase like polymeric chains running diagonally in the ab plane. The closest Cu⋯Cu contact in Cu2S2 core is 2.8327(7) Å. The step-like tetranuclear Cu4S2Cl2 core of 2 has Cu⋯Cu contact of 2.7974(4) Å in hetero-bridged Cu(μ-Cl)(μ-S)Cu moiety, and this contact is 2.7553(7) Å in homo-bridged Cu(μ-S)2Cu moiety.

Graphical abstractFrom copper(I) chloride and imidazolidine-2-thione under mild conditions, new polymers have been synthesized. For example, copper(I) chloride with imidazolidine-2-thione in 1:1 molar ratio in acetonitrile formed a novel polymer{Cu8(μ3-SN2C3H6)4(μ-SN2C3H6)4(η1-Cl)8}n1.Figure optionsDownload full-size imageDownload as PowerPoint slide
