Three kinds of in situ ligands syntheses involving malic acid, i.e. hydration, intra-molecular dehydration and isomeric transformation, have been found during studying on the syntheses of compounds 1–5. According these results, it can be concluded that the nature of metal atom affects strongly the in situ ligand synthesis, vice versa; the in situ ligand synthesis is favorable to the formation of coordination compound.
