Abstract

•We report five new complexes containing the new tridentate ligand 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dicyano-4-(4-quinolinyl)-1,4-dihydropyridine.•Complexes 1–3 show 1-D zigzag and beaded chains.•Complex 4–5 shows 2-D polymeric nets with the topology of (4,82)2 and (63,82,10)(8,102)(6,102), respectively.

The new tridentate ligand 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dicyano-4-(4-quinolinyl)-1,4-dihydropyridine, L, incorporating multi-functional groups have been synthesized and reacted with silver(I) salts to give complexes of the types [Ag(L)(NO3)·0.5H2O]∞, 1, {[Ag(L)2](ClO4)}∞, 2, {[Ag(L)2](CF3SO3)·H2O}∞, 3, [Ag(L)(CF3CO2)]∞, 4, and {[Ag(L)](PF6)·0.5H2O}∞, 5. All compounds have been characterized by spectroscopic methods and their structures determined by X-ray crystallography. The molecules of the free L ligand is interlinked with solvent molecules through various hydrogen bonds to form 2-D nets in the solid state. In complexes 1–3, the L ligand coordinates to the Ag(I) metal centers through one of the two cyano nitrogen atoms and the quinolinyl nitrogen atom to afford 1-D zigzag and beaded chains. The tridentate L ligand in complexes 4 and 5 bind soft acid Ag(I) ions through the cyano and quinolinyl groups forming the 2-D polymeric nets with the topology of (4,82)2 and (63,82,10)(8,102)(6,102), respectively.
