•Host frameworks are molybdenum–manganese-oxide-based hybrids.•Z-shaped chain incorporating manganese in both the +II and +IV oxidation states.•1-CPE is a good electrocatalyst for nitrite reduction in aqueous solution.•There are very weak antiferromagnetic interactions between Mn2+ and Mn4+ ions.
A new Keggin-ion-templated, heterometal-oxide-based organic–inorganic hybrid compound 1 [H+]4[MnIV(bpy)2MnII(bpy)2Mo(bpy)O5]2[bpy]2[PMo11VO40]2·4H2O (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) has been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, TG analysis, XPS spectrum and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The cationic host of compound 1 represents Z-shaped hexa-metal chain of overall formula [Mn4Mo2O10(bipy)10]4+ incorporating manganese in both the +II and +IV oxidation states. The electrochemical and magnetic properties of compound 1 were also investigated.
