Abstract

•Highly crystalline layered mixed metal fluorides obtained by green mechanochemical synthesis.•AA′CuF4 (A = K and A′ = Rb) has been realized for the first time.•Transformation of 2D layered structure to crystalline AMF3 aided by the mechanical activation.•Room temperature Raman spectrum of K2MgF4 has been presented for the first time.

A simple and green mechanochemical synthesis of layered perovskite structure type fluorides, A2MF4 (A = K, Rb; M = Co, Cu, Mg), from the stoichiometric reaction of their respective metal fluorides at room temperature using an agate pestle and mortar has been studied. The phases, so formed, were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Formation of 2D layered structure and its transformation to crystalline AMF3 structural arrangement was observed possibly induced by the mechanical activation.
