•Mononuclear arylpalladium xanthate complexes have been synthesized.•Xantate coordinates to palladium in an anisobidentate fashion.•Thermolysis of [PdPh(S2COPri)(PMe2Ph)] yields single phase of Pd4S.•[PdPh(S2COPri)(PMe2Ph)] has been used to deposit thin films of Pd4S by AACVD.
The reactions of [Pd2Ar2(μ-Cl)2(PR3)2] with sodium xanthates (NaS2COR′) in 1:2 stoichiometry afforded [PdAr(S2COR′)(PR3)] (Ar = Ph or 4-MeC6H4 (tol), PR3 = PEt3, PMe2Ph, PPrn3, R′ = Et, Pri), which were characterized by elemental analyses and NMR spectroscopy. Molecular structures of [PdPh(S2COEt)(PEt3)] and [PdPh(S2COPri)(PMe2Ph)] were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Thermolysis of [PdPh(S2COPri)(PMe2Ph)] yielded Pd4S, which was characterized by powder XRD, EDAX and SEM. The complex [PdPh(S2COPri)(PMe2Ph)] has also been used to deposit thin film of Pd4S by Aerosol-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (AACVD).
Graphical abstractThe reactions of [Pd2Ar2(μ-Cl)2(PR3)2] with NaS2COR′ afforded monomeric [PdAr(S2COR′)(PR3)] as revealed by structural analysis of [PdPh(S2COEt)(PEt3)] and [PdPh(S2COPri)(PMe2Ph)]. [PdPh(S2COPri)(PMe2Ph)] could be used for the preparation of single phasic Pd4S as well as deposition of thin films of Pd4S.Figure optionsDownload full-size imageDownload as PowerPoint slide
