Abstract
•We recall our encounters with, and inspiration by, Alex Shilov.•Studies on the Shilov system lead to a global mechanism for alkane hydroxylation.•Further studies on model Pt complexes provide finer mechanistic details.•We examine implications for potential practical applications.
Following a brief account of our personal encounters with Alex Shilov, we summarize our 20+ years work on the mechanism of the Shilov system and related C–H activation chemistry.
