We present a review of synthetic methods and physico-chemical properties of cyclo(carbo)silazanes that could form the basis of composite ceramic materials of type Six(Cy)Nz, as well as polymeric materials. The review is compiled as a guide for the preparation of such compounds, which have the potential to be further modified to access novel derivatives. The review is subdivided according to ring size. Each section presents known synthetic methods to obtain various types of cyclo(carbo)silazanes and also highlights their possible functionalisation. The review also includes reactions of N-unsubstituted cyclic derivatives and data on the hydrolytic stability of such compounds.
Graphical abstractThe review evaluates known synthetic methods of cyclo(carbo)silazanes and summarises important physico-chemical properties. It is compiled as a guide for the targeted preparation of various classes of respective compounds. The review also includes useful transformations of N-unsubstituted cyclic derivatives and data on hydrolytic stability of cyclo(carbo)silazanes.Figure optionsDownload full-size imageDownload as PowerPoint slideHighlights► We review synthetic methods for the preparation of cyclo(carbo)silazanes. ► We include reactions of N-unsubstituted cyclic derivatives. ► We highlight useful physico-chemical properties of target compounds. ► The data on hydrolytic stability of respective compounds are provided.
