Several new symmetrical aromatic hydrocarbon bridged bipyridine ligands and their binuclear Ru (II) complexes have been designed, synthesized and characterized on the basis of 1H NMR, MS and HRMS. Their absorption and emission properties, electrochemical behaviors and electrochemical luminescence were investigated. All ruthenium complexes show characteristic MLCT absorption and similar redox potential. Among the three complexes reported, 4c has the best electrochemical luminescence property.
Graphical abstractThe central aromatic hydrocarbon and ruthenium tris(bipyridine) have been covalently connected to form novel symmetrical hydrocarbon centered binuclear Ru (II) complexes. Of the three complexes studied, the naphthalene ring centered complex 3c exhibited the best electro-chemiluminescence properties, 6 times stronger than that of the reference compound Ru(bpy)32+.Figure optionsDownload full-size imageDownload as PowerPoint slide
