Abstract

Nanoshell carbon (NS) have properties such as hollow shell like structure, size range of primary particle (20–50 nm in diameter), high rate of electron transfer and excellent dispersivity in aqueous solutions without surface modification. Investigation of cytochrome c (cyt c) adsorption was performed against NSs prepared by varying carbonization catalysts (Co, Fe) and temperatures (800, 1000 °C). Higher carbonization temperature and the selection of Fe as the carbonization catalyst seemed to lead to better adsorptive abilities of carbons toward cyt c. Quinone groups on NS surface might play an important role on the adsorption of cyt c. The results obtained in this study suggest that NSs have the potential for use as novel electrode materials for immobilization of cyt c.
