The effect of coating type on mechanical properties and controlled drug release of PCL/zein coated 45S5 bioactive glass scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

•We offered the PCL/zein composite as an organized design coating for BG scaffolds.•Our results propose a novel type of drug controlled-release composite scaffolds.•The mechanical stability of BG scaffold was increased via coating by PCL and zein.•They are promising candidates for in-situ drug release in bone tissue engineering.
