Abstract

Fibre reinforced plastics (FRPs) are increasingly being used to make trains as well as infrastructure including railway bridges, platforms, and sleepers. However as John Osborne explains, arguably the greatest challenge that the composites industry faces is convincing rail engineers that modern polymer composites which have often been developed for use in aircraft are suitable for use in trains and that the composites are not expensive.
